Chinese export lacquerware is intricate, precise, and a fascinating remnant of the centuries of trade between China & The West. All Chinese export lacquerware was made in Canton. It was primarily made in black lacquered Chinese swamp cypress wood. Canton export table cabinets, sewing boxes, work boxes, games boxes, dressing mirrors, fans, games tables, chess tables & jewellery cabinets were all made for trade to America, Europe & Britain between 1600 and 1920. Chinese export lacquerware was made for wealthy members of the Western upper class in the Qing dynasty including the Georgians when Chinoiserie was all the rage in the early 19th century.
