    Chip Carved Merchants Box From Rajasthan - 19thC

    This lovely chip carved Box is from Rajasthan has the original ironwork- made from Roheda wood.


    Used in the old days by merchants in the markets and by Indian families for the Dowry of their daughters. They are usually made from Teak or Roheda wood. Our boxes are mostly from Rajasthan. They are bound in iron or brass. Often they are decorated with chip carving that is almost identical to European chip carving, probably because of contact in ancient times with traders and armies travelling from the north.
