Framed Taoist Yao Painting Of Lingbao Tianzun - 19thC

    SKU:M625V2

    £1,850

This Taoist painting is from a set of Yao ceremonial paintings and dates to the Qing dynasty (1645–1912), most likely the early 19th century. This style of painting is printed on mulberry paper and has been carefully framed.

This painting depicts Lingbao Tianzun, the youngest of the Three Pure Ones as indicated by his emerald green robes and both civilian & military attendants with a dragon curled around his feet. He symbolises the energy of the heavens. He is also known as 'The Celestial Worthy of Numinous Treasure.

The Yao were originally from Hunan province in China and migrated to Northern Vietnam. Laos & Thailand. There are various Yao subgroups who all share a written language based on archaic Chinese and a Daoist religion.

The Yao worship the Jade Emperor as the ruler of the cosmos and honor the Three Pure Ones as the creators of the universe. Yao is shamanistic and as the Yao culture was migratory worship was done in homes with temporary shrines and hung paintings like this one.

Similar examples can be found on display at the Fowler Museum at UCLA in the 'How to Make the Universe Right' exhibition.
